Ice Fishing

Ice
Fishing

I
woke up to the sound of the front door slamming shut and the sound
of metal banging it was coming from the kitchen, so I got up to see
what. It was it was Dad with the ice traps I said.

“What are you doing? It is 6:00 in the morning on Saturday!”

“Yah
but we need to get this done so we can go ice fishing tomorrow”
Dad said.

“Ice Fishing?” I said .

“Yep”,
he said “I have not been in 10 years”.

“Ok let's get it done”. We got the traps
and went over them. When I say went over them I mean we put the
fishing hooks on the line. Then we had to get permission to ice fish
at the spot we wanted to and get bait. The bait is shiners that are
small fish that have black lines down their back that go to their
nose or chin.

The
next day I got up early, got dressed and went out to the kitchen. Dad
was all ready up and ready to go, but I was not. He had the traps
already loaded. In the van with everything else. All that was left
was the ice auger, and that I had to load. I loaded it, and we were
off at 9:30. We had to get bait first before we went out on the

lake.
Then we had to drill all the holes, set the traps and wait until a
flag goes up and It was 10:30 by the time we got the traps set up.

It
was not long until a flag went up. Dad told me to get it, so I did.
But I did not get the fish. It took the bait, so I had to put a new
shiner on and put it back in the hole. Dad said that it was ok and
was telling me how to catch the fish. The another flag went up, and
Dad and I went out. He showed me how to do it. While he was telling
me another flag went up. He said,“Go get it.” I ran over
and started to pull it in, but I lost the fish. luckily the bate was
still there. When I went back to Dad, he had a big pickerel, witch
was the biggest pickerel I had ever seen. We scaled it, put it in the
snow and covered it .

No flags came up for a few minutes which gave us time
to rest. Then I saw one then two; Dad got one, and I got the other.
When I was running over to check the trap I was saying to myself,
please let me get the fish. When I got there I looked at the reel it
was still spinning that meant the fish was still taking the line.
Then it stopped. I grabbed the ice trap and slowly pulled it a way
from the hole and set the reel up. Then I watched the reel and it
started to move again. Next it stopped and it was time to strike so
I grabbed the line and yanked. Then I started pulling. Finally I
saw the fish and was proud of myself. I caught a pickerel, but it
was not the biggest. Dad had caught the biggest but I caught the
second biggest. Then we set the traps and waited .

The sun was getting low and we pulled in the traps and went home. On
the way home Dad and I talked about the day, like when he cot the big
pickerel and when I cot a fish and how prow I was that I cot it. Dad
told me about when he used to ice fish allthe time
